15 Clunky Phrases to Eliminate From Your Writing Today…and How to Crack Down on Wordiness
clunkyは「ぶざまな、ぎこちない、不格好な」(awkward or badly done)という意味の形容詞です。冗長な表現をclunky phraseと言います。wordinessはほぼ同義語です。Your Dictionaryにはwords or the use of words in excess of those needed for clarity or precisionと説明されています。
オックスロイヤルアカデミーはオックスフォード大学のカレッジと寮を借りて授業を行うサマースクールです。アメリカやイギリスの大学では寮生は授業のない夏の間は寮から追い出されるので夏休みの間、非正規学生のために校舎と寮を利用できます。メインは13歳から18歳の生徒を対象とした英語コースですが、18歳以上でも受けられるコースや、語学以外のコースも用意されています。そのほとんどが2週間か4週間のプログラムです。2週間のコースで￡4,495なので70万円近く、4週間コースだと￡8,695 なので130万円近くかかります。寮費、食費、ロンドン観光その他のアクティビティー費すべてコミですが、お得なプログラムではありません。

語数を増やしたいときや文章を知的に見せたいときに、学生はついclunky phraseを使いがちです。clunky phraseを使っても文法的には間違いになりませんが、英語ライティングではシンプルで明快な文章が好まれます。以下、オックスフォードロイヤルアカデミーの記事に載っていた避けておきたい15のclunky phrasesです。
In terms of ～の観点から、～を単位として
In terms of Bronte’s imagery, the author has some interesting observations.
のin terms ofはaboutに変えて、

としましょう。
The data is expressed in terms of a percentage.
は
The data is expressed as a percentage. と書いた方がシンプルで堅苦しさがなくなります。
伊藤和夫の『新・基本英文700選』にもin terms ofを使った英文が収録されています。
654. It is wrong to try to judge happiness in terms of worldly success. 幸福というものを世俗的な成功という点から考えるのは間違っている。
この英文も
It is wrong to equate worldly success with happiness. (世俗的な成功を幸福と同一視するのは間違っている。)
としたほうが良いです。
ちなみに伊藤氏はIt is wrong to try to judge…を「～を考えるのは間違っている」と訳していますが間違いです。正しくは「～を考えようとするのは間違っている」となります

due to the fact that… ～という事実のために;
in light of the fact that… ～という事実に照らし合わせて;
given the fact that… ～という事実を踏まえて
これらはsinceもしくはbecauseと書き換えることができます。
This may also partly be due to the fact that agricultural policy has changed over the years. ➡ This may also partly be because agricultural policy has changed over the years.
『新・基本英文700選』には
136. The fact is that I don’t know anything about him. 実は、彼のことを私は何も知らないのです。
という文章が載っていますが、I don’t know anything about him. にThe fact is thatをつけ加える必要性はありません。
Needless to say 言うまでもなく; It goes without saying that ～は言うまでもない
“Needless to say” does not need to be said.
なので、こういう冗長語はカットしましょう。『新・基本英文700選』の
391. Air as well as sunlight is, needless to say, indispensable to our daily life. もちろん空気は日光とともに、毎日の生活に欠かせぬものである。
176. It goes without saying that those who are awake to their own rights must respect those of others. 自分の権利に目覚めた者が、他人の権利も尊重しなければならないことは、言うまでもない。
needless to sayとIt goes without saying thatのどちらも必要ありません。
In order to ～するために
toは多様な意味のある前置詞なので「目的」を意味していることが不明確な時のみtoをin order toに変えてください。「目的」の意味が明確な場合はtoで十分です。

360. In order to master a foreign language, you had best go to the country where it is spoken. 外国語を習得するには、それが使われている国へ行くのが一番よい。
366. In order to know a man, you have only to travel with him for a week. 一週間もいっしょに旅行すれば、どんな人かがわかるものである。
662. What do you think we must do in order to maintain world peace? 世界の平和を維持するには、われわれはどうしなければならないと思いますか。
のin order toはすべてtoに変えましょう。
You had best go to the country where it is spoken to master a foreign language.
You have only to travel with a man for a week to know him.

All of the ～のすべてのもの
allの後に名詞が続くときは必ずofをつけ加えないといけないと思っている人が多いですが、それはall of usやall of themなど、後に続く語が代名詞の時のみです。名詞の場合はofは必要ありません。all of the cakesはall the cakes、all of the buildingsはall the buildings、all of the peopleはall the peopleと書きましょう。
At the end of the day 要するに、結局のところは
at the end of the dayとは「要するに、結局のところ」という意味のイディオムです。ただし、私はこのイディオムを見かけたことがまったくありません。イギリス英語ではよく使われる表現なのでしょうか。代わりにultimatelyという副詞を使いましょう。
First and foremost; first of all まず第一に、何よりもまず
代わりにfirstもしくはfirstlyを使いましょう。
The passive voice 受動態
受動態の文章は能動態の文章よりも客観的で知的な印象を与えると思っている人が多いですが、必要な時以外は受動態を使わないようにしましょう。
It was decided by the authorities that a curfew should be imposed.
は
The authorities decided to impose a curfew.
と書いた方がはるかにわかりやすいです。

293. The new mayor is well spoken of by the citizens. こんどの市長は市民の評判がよい。
294. English and mathematics are made much of in senior high schools. 高等学校では英語と数学が重視されている。
は、The citizens speak well of the new mayor./ Senior high schools emphasize the study of English and mathematics. と言えばよいです。ちなみに「英語と数学を重視する」をmake much of English and mathematicsと言うのは不自然です。これについては「伊藤和夫「基本英文700選｣をググる: 第10回」をご確認ください。
Expressing possession 所有格の表現
the core of the Earthはthe Earth’s coreとシンプルにしてください。『新・基本英文700選」の
246. Respect of [by] the young for the old is quite natural. 若い者が老人を尊敬するのはきわめて当然なことである。
ですが、respect of the young for the oldという表現はひどいですね。The young’s respect for the oldに変えてください。
It is important to note that ～することに留意する必要がある
無駄な表現です。Importantlyと言い換えるか、この箇所を削除しましょう。
It is important to note that not all scholars agree on this.
は
Not all scholars agree on this. で十分です。
In actual fact 事実上、実は
actuallyかreallyと言う方がシンプルです。もしくは削除。
I thought she was Portuguese, but in actual fact she’s Brazilian.
は

でオーケー。
Inasmuch as ～なので
becauseもしくはsinceを使おう。
In excess of ～を超過して、～より多く
overもしくはmore thanと言えばよろしい。
The site was occupied by in excess of a hundred people.

と言おう。
In the process of
冗長的な表現です。大抵の場合はカットすればよいです。
When you are in the process of gathering data…
は
When you’re gathering data…に変えましょう。
Whether or not ～かどうか
or notは不必要です。
The character had no idea whether or not she would be making the right choice.
は
The character had no idea whether she would be making the right choice.
に変えましょう。
